The Biblical Foundation of Fasting

Fasting is a spiritual discipline practiced throughout Scripture by those seeking God's presence, guidance, and power. It is a voluntary abstinence from food or certain activities for spiritual purposes, demonstrating our hunger for God above all else.

Please Exercise Wisdom

If you are taking prescription medications, are pregnant, nursing, have diabetes, or have any chronic health conditions, please consult with your physician before beginning any fast. God honors wisdom, and your health matters to Him and to us.

Matthew 6:16-18 NLT

“And when you fast, don’t make it obvious, as the hypocrites do, for they try to look miserable and disheveled so people will admire them for their fasting. I tell you the truth, that is the only reward they will ever get. But when you fast, comb your hair and wash your face. Then no one will notice that you are fasting, except your Father, who knows what you do in private. And your Father, who sees everything, will reward you."

Isaiah 58:6 NLT

“No, this is the kind of fasting I want: Free those who are wrongly imprisoned; lighten the burden of those who work for you. Let the oppressed go free, and remove the chains that bind people."

Types of Fasting

Daniel Fast

Based on Daniel 10:2-3, this fast emphasizes vegetables, fruits, whole grains, nuts, seeds, and water while abstaining from meat, dairy, sweets, and processed foods.

Includes:

  • All fruits and vegetables

  • Whole grains (brown rice, oats, quinoa)

  • Legumes and beans

  • Nuts and seeds

  • Plant-based oils

  • Water and herbal teas

Excludes:

  • Meat and animal products

  • Dairy and eggs

  • Sugar and sweeteners

  • Leavened bread

  • Processed and fried foods

  • Caffeine and alcohol

Why We Fast

Fasting is not about earning God's favor or losing weight. It's about positioning ourselves to hear from heaven, break spiritual strongholds, and deepen our intimacy with the Father.

Spiritual Breakthrough

Fasting creates spiritual momentum and breaks through barriers that hinder our prayers and spiritual growth.

Divine Clarity

When we quiet the noise of daily life, we position ourselves to hear God's voice more clearly and receive His direction.

Deeper Intimacy

Fasting demonstrates our desire for God above physical comfort, drawing us into closer communion with Him.

Intercession

Fasting amplifies our prayers for breakthrough in our families, communities, nation, and world.

Humility & Repentance

Fasting humbles us before God, creating space for genuine repentance and spiritual realignment.

Corporate Unity

When we fast together as a church body, we experience powerful corporate breakthrough and unity in the Spirit.
